The Dropout Dilemma: Choosing Passion Over Prestige

Sep 11

It might seem counterintuitive to walk away from an offer at a company like Amazon, and believe me, it wasn't an easy decision. Being selected for the Business Analyst role was an honor, and I have immense respect for the innovation happening there. However, during the process, I had a moment of clarity about my own ambitions. My passion lies deeply in the technical weeds—in building and refining the models themselves. My goal is to be a Machine Learning Engineer or a Research Scientist. After honest conversations about the possibility of transitioning to a more technical role, it became clear that the timing wasn't right. Staying in a role that wasn't a direct fit, even at a top company, felt like delaying my true career path. Accepting the Machine Learning Engineer role in Paris was a deliberate choice to prioritize hands-on experience in my chosen field over the prestige of a brand name. It was a bet on myself and on the belief that aligning your work with your passion is the most sustainable path to long-term success. I'm excited about the future and remain hopeful that my path might cross with Amazon's again when the right data science opportunity arises.
